One of a kind Raku vases, thrown on the pottery wheel and then fired at 1100 degrees after undergoing a bisque firing. Once the pot reaches the ideal temperature it is taken out of the kiln and decorated with horse hair, feathers, and sugar. These organic components are carbonized on to the surface of the pot, creating a beautiful permanent design. Each piece is distinctly unique and handmade by potter Earnest Kepler of Hand of Clay.
Tall vases vary slightly in size, from 4"W x 7"H to 4 1/4"W x 7 3/4"H
Wide vases vary slightly in size, from 8"W x 5 1/4" to 6"H
About the Artist:
I was born in Augusta, Georgia, and have lived in Florida for the last 33 years. I've been a potter since 1991. I love clay and the texture of it on my hands. This feeling inspired my business name, Hand of Clay Pottery. I feel very close to the earth and to nature when I work. It has been a pleasure to be able to design and create for so many years. I get great joy being able to create something not only functional but beautiful. I produce a lot of functional wear but have a great love for raku pottery. The organic nature of the raku makes it especially appealing. It has a primal nature to it when you’re able to take it out of the kiln at 1100 degrees and then apply horse hair, feathers and sugar to create a one of a kind piece. The process has a magical aspect to it. The fire and smoke from the application of the organic pieces create their special beauty on the pottery.
